Happy National Farmers Day 2022 – Every September 24 our country celebrates National Farmers Day. Do you know the importance of celebrating National Farmers Day? Let’s find out an explanation of the history and meaning of this event!
History of National Farmers Day as a Milestone Against Colonialism
Not only a maritime country but Indonesia is also known as an agricultural country. This is because most of Indonesia’s population works in agriculture. This condition continues today. Despite the many new jobs that are emerging in the digital age, agriculture is still one of the largest sectors in which our society is engaged.
September 24 was chosen as National Farmers Day which is used to mark the struggle of the peasant class and their liberation from the misery of the colonial period. During the colonial period, the Indonesian people experienced the severity of labor exploitation, land tenure, and the confiscation of crops by the colonialists. This got worse after the passage of the Agrarian Law of 1870 (Agrarische Wet) which gave birth to a system of forced cultivation (cultuurstelsel).
Since being released from the grip of the Dutch, the Indonesian government has gradually sought the independence of the farmers, especially regarding land and ownership disputes. This struggle began in 1948 and lasted for 12 years. During that time, the government has been aggressively erasing the remnants and influences of colonialism by revamping the national agrarian law.
On September 24th, 1960, the Minister of Agrarian Affairs, Mr. Sadjarwo submitted an RUU which was then drafted by the Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Gotong-Royong (DPR-GR). The RUU was later approved by the DPR as Law No. 5 of 1960 on Peraturan Dasar Pokok-Pokok Agraria, otherwise known as Undang-Undang Pembaruan Agraria (UUPA). This UUPA became the starting point for the birth of new land law to replace the product of colonial agrarian law.
UUPA is the legal umbrella for the national agrarian wealth in our country. This law refers to Article (3) paragraph 33 of the 1945 Constitution, “Earth and water and all the wealth contained therein are controlled by the State and used for the greatest prosperity of the people”. The law was born from the spirit of resistance to colonialism which has robbed the Indonesian people of their human rights for centuries.
The Service of the Food Hero
Since September 24, 1960, the people of Indonesia have finally been able to stand up and own their land. But that does not mean the struggle of the farmers is over. Until now, Indonesian farmers are still struggling to make a big contribution to the country.
Quoting President Soekarno’s words, “The life and death of a country are in the hands of the agricultural sector”. This is because the agricultural sector has a major impact, especially regarding food security.
To become a country with good food security, the agricultural sector must advance and develop. This will protect our country from the threat of a food crisis as experienced by several other countries.
Until now, our farmers have succeeded in providing many benefits to the country. On Indonesia’s 77th Independence Day, our country won an award from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for achieving rice self-sufficiency and improving the food security system.
Yep, during the crisis and recession, our country was able to survive with the help and great contributions of the farmers. However, this condition has not been accompanied by the welfare of farmers. Farmers need help and support from many parties, including us.
