Cultivating Trust in Team

“United we stand, divided we fall.”

That is an excerpt from The Liberty Song by John Dickinson, the Founding Father of the United States. It is also a quote that Edwin Setiawan held onto when building the team. As Engineering Manager of the Tech team at TaniFund, Edwin learns the meaning of trust in building a team that produces P2P products. Working in the Fintech industry, there are many risks and regulations to keep in mind and pay attention to on a daily basis while going through the challenges of developing products for TaniFund, a peer-to-peer lending platform under TaniHub Group. With those challenges, trust is the most important aspect to look upon. “Without trust, we cannot unite,” he said. It is the super glue that holds and binds every member of the team together.

According to Edwin, trust increases a sense of ownership because each team is able to internalize the impact of the goals they need to achieve. In addition to completing their tasks based solely on the role they should be, they also have an internal drive to give the best of their work, because they have an understanding that everyone on their team will also give their best. This means, they feel that they are part of the whole product being built, not just team members or team leaders.

At TaniFund, Edwin and his team believe in the mission of supporting farmers to obtain the loans they need to develop their farming projects. Not only that, Edwin and his team also support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with the funds needed to develop businesses. On the other hand, they provide assistance and market access for TaniFund borrowers to help them grow and increase their income and make an impact at the same time.

Based on his experience, Edwin has concluded that there are 3 main aspects that help foster a sense of trust for his team:

  • Analyze your team – This starts with getting to know your team personally and finding out their respective strengths and weaknesses. Take note of everyone’s plus points to later become a reference in giving work. During the discussion, ask them questions that allow them to give good advice. These usually come from people who are very passionate about the topic being discussed. When having different discussions, ask for opinions from different members who you think are more passionate about the topic. This way, you can delegate tasks according to the skills and interests of each person on the team.
  • Transparency – When working in an industry such as P2P, transparency is very important to maintain. When you’re being transparent with your team about business challenges and wins the game, your team will understand the impact their contribution has had on their work. This is very difficult to do but the results are well worth it.
  • Remind them of the impact – It’s easy to get lost in busy-ness and get distracted by the easy aspects of work. This is why it’s important to take a few steps back and remind you and your team the “WHY” aspect. Trusting impact is as important as trusting each other.

Leading a team has its highs and lows. There would be many more lessons for Edwin to learn in the future. Edwin is pleased that trust has been the foundation of his team for now. “Can’t wait to learn more with future TaniFund team members!” said Edwin.
